Cholesterol stories

You can be fit and still have high cholesterol.

Like a lot of people, I used to think high cholesterol only happened to those who were overweight, inactive, or unhealthy. I never thought it would happen to me.

As a two-time Olympic rower, I have always maintained a healthy diet and a strict exercise regime to ensure I was in top form to compete. I was shocked to discover I had high cholesterol only a few months after I competed at the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000.

My doctor told me I had hereditary high cholesterol, which is a result of my family history. What I also learnt is that high cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart attack and stroke.

With a combination of cholesterol-lowering medication as well as maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise routine, I'm pleased to say I have been able to lower my cholesterol to an acceptable level.

This is a real-life testimonial which has been developed and approved by Alison Fallon.
