I used to think high cholesterol was only a health issue for old people. That was until I suffered a heart attack at the age of 38 and was diagnosed with having the condition.
The doctor said high cholesterol is a major risk factor for stroke and heart disease, and it could happen again if I didn't start taking care of myself. That was a wake up call for me, I definitely wasn't ready to leave my children.
Now I am more careful with the foods I eat and how much I exercise. I have regular check-ups with my doctor to make sure my cholesterol is in check and I am also on cholesterol-lowering medication.
I know most men, like me, only go to the doctor if they are in pain. My message to them is don't put off going to the doctor. There are no obvious symptoms for high cholesterol, it can only be detected through a blood test, so put in the effort and go and get checked, for you and your family's sake.
