At 54, I have always thought of myself as a healthy person, particularly with four sons and my husband to keep me active.
I asked for a cholesterol test from my GP after a friend told me as many as one in two Australians over 25 have the condition. Even though I doubted I was at risk, the tests revealed I did in fact have high cholesterol.
My doctor told me that high cholesterol is not just based on age or weight, and that it is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death for men and women in Australia. He advised me to eat a healthy diet, exercise daily, and get my cholesterol levels checked regularly.
As a mother, I know how important it is to manage my cholesterol for my family's sake, so I can be there for them over the years to come.
My message to people is to be aware high cholesterol can happen to anyone. You can find out if you are at risk through a simple blood test from your GP.
